Gerhardson, Public Works Director <br />DATS: March 7, 1990 <br />SUBJECT: Baseball Diamond Improvements - Bederwood Park <br />On February 9, 1990 Mr. Gary Larson from the Orono Baseball <br />Association appreared before the Park Commission with a proposal <br />for the baseball diamond at Bederwood Park. <br />Mr. Larson stated that they would like to upgrade the ball <br />diamond to Little League standards. Little League standards <br />require dugouts, fencing and a scoreboard, the association would <br />also like to construct a concession stand/press box. <br />The Park Commission approved the proposal contingent on <br />certain requirements (see attached correspondence). On February <br />26, 1990 the ^ark Commission recommendation was heard by the <br />Orono Council. Because the neighbors objected to the proposal <br />the matter was referred back to the Park Commission. <br />On March 6, 1990 the Park Commission reviewed the proposal <br />for the second time with several neighbors adjacent to the park <br />in attendance. <br />The concern of the neighbors were basically: <br />1. Increased use. <br />2. Parking. <br />3. Noise. <br />4. Permanent structures creating an attractive <br />nuisance. <br />5. Interference with other park type activities. <br />6. Excu^ive use. <br />The Park Commission approved the proposal contingent upon: <br />1. No concession stand - (they can sell concessions <br />from a mobile unit). <br />2. <br />3. <br />4. <br />at <br />5. <br />No lights. <br />No public address system. <br />City should consider expansion of the parking lot <br />the City's expense. <br />When Orono Baseball Association mov'3 to another <br />site. City will have option as to whether fencing and <br />dugouts will remain or removed. If removed, must be <br />done by Orono Baseball Association. <br />6. Orono Baseball Association will submit affidavit <br />of insurance to City. <br />7. Orono Baseball Association will have exclusive use <br />of ball diamond only from 2 p.m. - dark, Monday through <br />Friday from April 15 to July 15, 1990. <br />8. Orono Baseball Association must post a schedule of <br />times and dates when ball diamonds is in use.
