DTYCfOPCNOLiiaedo^^ <br />N ational Wildflowtr R esearch Center <br />-----Midwest R egional Office <br />nP, <br />[SER 2 .4 1991 <br />Mission <br />The Midwest Office of the National VVildflower J^esearch Center promotes the preserv'a <br />tion and use of native trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and grasses throughout the midwest. <br />This office serves as a source of information on native flora for homeowners, landscape <br />architects, municipalities, developers, county extension agents, state agencies, garden <br />dubs, and others. <br />First-Year Plans----------------------- <br />•Host a midwest native plant research <br />colloquium <br />•Host a midwest conference on <br />landscaping with native plants <br />•Organize an advisory committee <br />•Set up a database of regional <br />information <br />•Develop a reference and slide library <br />of regional native plants <br />Services ---------------------------------- <br />In 1991 and the future, the Midwest <br />Regional Office will provide a variety of <br />services. Staff members will: <br />•create fact sheets, <br />•organize workshops, <br />•write articles for a variety of publications, <br />•enco ’irage children's native plant projects, <br />•suppor t other organizations involved with <br />native plants, <br />•develop a regional fa ‘ booklet and travel <br />ing (hsplay, <br />•establish native plant demonstrations, <br />•organize a volunteer training workshop, <br />and <br />•coordinate a midwest research network to <br />identify native plant research needs. <br />Requests ----------------------------------- <br />Since the Midwest Regional Office <br />op ened, various groups and individuals <br />have requested assistance. Staff members <br />have been asked to: <br />•speak at native plant conferences and <br />other meetings, <br />•testify on city lawn ordinances, <br />•advise the environmental group Kids <br />for Saving Earth, <br />•work with citv/countv roadside <br />managers, <br />•publish a prairie bibliography, and <br />•guide Arbor Day and other special <br />events. <br />Response ----------------------------------- <br />Public response to the Wildflower <br />Center's Midw ’est Regional Office has been <br />gratifying. Numerous groups have offered <br />to collaborate on various projects with the <br />Mid west Office staff. <br />Several businesses have donated seeds, <br />equipment, and services to the ofiice.
