the current 7-lot development, the ability to provide sewer if additional lakeshore development <br />occurs, or if existing systems become a problem, will help to ensure the long-term protection of Lake <br />Minnetonka. <br />Description of Area Proposed for MUSA Inclusion <br />This amendment consists of the incorporation of an additional 155 acres of land within the MUSA <br />boundary. The area to be included in the MUSA is generally located west of Old Crystal Bay Road <br />and South of Fox Street (see legal description attached). The entire 155-acre area is zoned LR-IA, <br />Single Family Lakeshore Residential, requiring a minimum lot size of 2 acres. Existing <br />development within the area is entirely single family homes, most developed at a density of 1 lot per <br />2-plus acres, with a few estate parcels of 5-20 acres each remaining for possible future development. <br />To protect Lake Minnetonka from the negative impacts of development, Orono plans and intends <br />that development of this area w ill occur at densities no greater than 1 dw'elling unit per 2 acres. <br />• <br />Local and Regional Goals <br />It should be noted that w'hile Orono continues to develop pnmarily at residential densities which will <br />ultimately serve to limit the impacts of development on Lake Minnetonka, the City is making further <br />strides toward meeting a number of local and regional goals: <br />Bonestroo and Associates is nearing completion of Orono's Comprehensive Surface <br />Water Management Plan <br />The Water Supply Plan has been submitted to Metropolitan Council for review <br />Orono and a number of Lake Minnetonka area cities are sponsoring development of <br />a Lake Minnetonka Sub-Regional Housing Plan to identify and address local and <br />sub-regional housing issues and goals, including affordable and life-cycle housing <br />needs and opportunities <br />The Planning Commission and City Council are currently reviewing proposals for <br />a number of life-cycle housing developments in the Navarre area of Orono, including <br />a 30-unit townhome proposal on a 10-acre site along Shoreline Drive, and a 6-unit <br />proposal for twinhomes on a 3-acre parcel on Shadywood Road <br />Orono and Long Lake continue to work toward solving the myriad of redevelopment <br />issues surrounding the Highway 12 Corridor slated for construction starting in 2002. <br />The City is in the process of reviewing and updating the 1980 Orono Comprehensive <br />Plan to meet State and regional mandates. <br />Page 2 of2
