Summary of Long Lake Fire Commission Meeting of Wednesday, September 23, 1998
October 8, 1998
Page 2 __________________________________________________
;ar
; to
B. In 1997, the Long Lake Fire Department determined an immediate need for a new
light rescue vehicle and the replacement of a utility truck at a cost of $100,000
(Orono's share - $70,000). When these purchases were authorized by the City of
Long Lake, Orono advised Long Lake that the expenditures were not built into the
City's fire vehicle funding plan, and that the Long Lake Fire Department needed to
develop a long-term plan for vehicle replacement to enable Orono to make
determinations regarding the level of funding required.
In response. Long Lake provided the attached eighteen year capital improvement
plan with a total cost of $634,000. More recently. Long Lake has prepared the
attached five year vehicle replacement forecast that has moved the replacement of the
fire engine from 1999 to 2002, but has also added a tank with a pump, and an engine
with an aerial ladder, that were not a part of the initial capital improvement plan. The
replacement of the heavy rescue vehicle has also been moved from the year 2003 to
the year 2000 at a cost of $175,000 vs. the initial planned cost of $140,000.
Although the purchase of the light rescue vehicle and utility truck has sigmficantly reduced
the balance in the City's fire vehicle replacement account, the replacement of a fire engine
in 2003 can still be accomplished with minor adjustments to the current annual fire
equipment replacement funding level. However, if any qqs of the three other vehicles is to
be purchased in the timeframe reflected in the five year forecast, the City's annual funding
amount would need to more than double from its current level of $20,000 per year.
Based on the potential substantial costs to Orono related to both a new fire facility and new
fire vehicles, staff recommends the City of Orono have substantial involvement in the
process of determining equipment and facility needs.
lity
•Jilt.
