They have a hockey nnk at KJappnch park
on West Wayzata Boulevard, and a smaller open skating rink located m the nei^borhood north of
Highway \2. The neighborhood rink does not have a warmmg house or any lights and is a lower
mittenLce rink. The main rink in Klapprich Park has lights and » supervised warming house,
which is open weekdays from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. and from Noon to 9:00 p.m. on weekends.
The Klapprich Park rink is heavily used and has excellent ice quality. The City spends considerable
time Md effort in maintaining this rink. City staff estimated that 10 man-hours of labor m spent
every day taking cate of this rink. The rink is scraped and flooded every mght after closing, ms
Allows for freezing of the ice overnight. Morning flooding can cause problems on warmer ^ys wten
the Ice does not freeze solidly before the rink Is used. On weekends with heavy use, the nnk is
scraped end flooded with a thin coat late in the afternoon. Wayzata h^ dedicated employes to e
care'of ice rinks, snow removal is completed on rinks immediately after snow storms, In Otono the
rinks are cleaned after the street plowing is completed.
The City of Wayzata has eighteen employees in Public Works with separate departoents for Parks.
Streets and Utilities. Orono has eight Public Works employees to cover a l^ger City with bigger
sewer and water systems than Wayzata. The rink is plowed after s^et plowmg is
coirnlrt-d A truck with a 1,000-gallon tank is used for flooding of the nnk. 1^^
nlawLnt of more even coats of ice on the rink. Sev ral thin coats are usually applied. On colder
tosTe ice has time to freeze while the truck is refilU -. Mr. Kluver said that f ““
use a truck for flooding of the rinks after initial hydrant flooding is used to establish “*•
Tf a flying ttuck is less labor intensive than hose flooding nnd only requ^es one person The l«el
of rink maintenance provided by Tonka bay is more re^onable «« Orono^ ^ng levels, than
rink maintenance provided by Woodhill Country Club and the City of Wayzata.
Summary and Recommendations
Comoletion of this study on ice rinks has been informative and much information w^ obtained
which w-11 be useful for improving the quality of the ice at the Orono nnks.
