She sees <br />furn-of-the^entur>- families, dressed <br />•n their Sunday best, stepping otf the <br />train, bound for t.heir summer places <br />on the lake. .At a: years old. Millie <br />recalls the heydays of Lake .\linne- <br />tonka during the early part ot the <br />:entur\-. <br />•‘When I was young, people didn t <br />go up north! they spent their summers <br />or summer vacations on Lake Minne ­ <br />tonka and they came here by train." <br />she recalls. So busy was the area that <br />five commuter trains ran daily from <br />the cities to the lake during the sum ­ <br />mer months. Banks and others of the <br />Westonka Historical Society believe <br />tha t residents know little of the <br />area's rich history: nor do they know <br />the important part the Mound Depot <br />once played. Banks, a former English <br />teacher, is in the process of writing a <br />book. A partial answer to <br />this question is contained in the <br />Mound Comprehensive Plan Up­ <br />date, which has been assembled <br />by the city’s Planning Commission <br />over the past 18 months. The <br />Commission has scheduled a <br />public bearing on the plan for <br />Monday. Inly 23 at 7;30 p.m. at City <br />HalL At this hearing, the Commis­ <br />sion wishes to hear comments from <br />residents on their views of the city <br />at the turo-of-the-century and spe ­ <br />cifically. comments on the content <br />of the plan. <br />A comprehensive plan is an <br />assembly of maps and text dis ­ <br />cussing existing and proposed <br />land use. housing, transportation <br />parks and recreation areas and <br />o'lher public facilities. The plan <br />also contains a set of goals and <br />policies that are intended to guide <br />development decisions over the <br />ne.xt 10 years. Additionally, the <br />plan forms the basis for future <br />modifications if the zoning ordi ­ <br />nance. In the Twin Cities Metro­ <br />politan Area omprehensive pians <br />were mandated by the passage of the <br />1976 Land Planning Act. In re­ <br />sponse to the legislation, a pian <br />was prepared in the early 1980s. <br />The cu.Tcnt comprehensive plan <br />update builds upon the earlier <br />plan. <br />In accordance with the law. <br />the .Mound Comprehensive Plan is <br />rn tho ravriAw nf the Metro ­ <br />politan Council. Their review, <br />which will occur after the public <br />hearing, will focus on the plan s <br />consistency with what are called <br />metropolitan systems. Metropoli ­ <br />tan systems include transporta ­ <br />tion. auT)orts. parks and open <br />space, sanitary sewer capacity’ and <br />solid waste. After review by the <br />Metropolitan Council, the plan <br />can be formally adopted by the City <br />of Mound. <br />Copies of the plan are avail­ <br />able for review at City Hall and at <br />the Mound Library Mark your <br />calendars for July 23. Come to the <br />Planning Commission meeting <br />and share your vision of what <br />Vlound should be in the year 2000.
