Minutes
Park Commission Regular Meeting
Tuesday, February 6, 2024, 6:00 PM
City Council Chambers 2780 Kelley Parkway, Orono, MN 55356
Roath moved, Stofer seconded, to move the Pickleball Master Plan to the design phase. VOTE:
Ayes 7, Nays 0.
3. Golf Course Pavilion
Staff said they were seeking a recommendation from the Park Commission to move forward with the
proposed Golf Course Pavilion. The Orono Lions have expressed an interest in partnering with the City
to build a pavilion near the parking lot in the same character as the club house and to complete it in time
for the 100 year anniversary celebration in June. The Pavilion would be for the use of everyone who
comes to the golf course or park. The project would be funded by donations and City funds. The image
presented was a concept, not a design.
Members of the Lions Club were also present.
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about the location and said they would still like to have input
into the design after referring it to the City Council. Commissioners expressed thanks to the Lions for
stepping forward.
Roath moved, Stofer seconded, to recommend to City Council to move ahead with the Golf Course
Pavilion proposal. VOTE: Ayes 7, Nays 0.
3. Park Commission 2024 Goals
Staff shared the 2024 goals as a document with columns and said no action would be required but the
document would be available at every Park Commission meeting throughout the year. The document also
lists standing and special sub -committees.
Commissioners reviewed and discussed the goals and sub -committee assignments.
4. Parks Update
Staff said little has been going on because of the winter months, even snow removal, but because of the
weather they have been able to go ahead with some items like tree trimming. They hope to be able to
open the golf course earlier this year than the past two years.
COMMISSIONERS' REPORTS
Huddy asked about accessibility for the disabled in Orono Parks and suggested this is one of the items he
would like to look at going forward.
Berg pointed out deliberate damage that has been done to Lydiard Beach including ripping out the gates,
which impacts the park budget and needs to be addressed. Commissioners discussed the different types of
access points including car, pedestrian and strictly beach.
Commissioners promoted the Adopt -A -Park program.
4
