V
Date:
% %
/
Mayor Peterson and Orono City Council
Ron Moorse, City Ad:ninistrator
From: Michael P. Gaffron, Asst, Planning & Zoning Administrator
November 4, 1992
Subject: "Styrofoam" Ordinance - Revised Terminology
Attached is a brochure received from Glen Gakemeier who
represents Dow Chemical's "styrofoam" brand products in the midwest.
He is requesting that we revise our styrofoam ordinance to eliminate
the term "styrofoam" and replace it with a generic term such as
"molded polystyrene expanded-bead foam". Clearly, we are not the
first entity to use the proprietary name "styrofoam" as a generic
term, given the effort they put into the brochure.
Attached is a copy of the existing ordinance with the word
styrofoam highlighted, and a copy of an amended ordinance using the
terir "molded polystyrene expanded-bead foam". Since this is not an
amendmp t of the zoning code. Council may adopt this ordinance to
amend Ordinance #104, 2nd Series without the need for a public hearing
or Planning Commission review.
2nd Series,
Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends approval of Ordinance #_ _ _,
amending Ordinance #104, 2nd Series to replace the word *^styrofoam"
with the phrase "molded polystyrene expanded-bead foam".
Proposed motion: Moved by ___________, seconded by _____________t
to adopt Ordinance #_ _ _, 2nd Series, to amended Ordinance #104, 2nd
Series by replacing the term "styrofoam" wherever it appears, with the
phrase "molded polystyrene expanded-bead foam". _ _ _ _ ayes, _ _ _ _
nayes.
