fM 2 ®19»
January 22, 1993
Orono City Council
City of Orono
P.O. Box 66
Orono. MN 55323
Dear Orono City Council Members.
Enclosed are my application for a position on Orono Planning Commission and related
information regarding my qualifications for and interest in this opportunity.
In summary, my work experience includes more than 20 years in marketing and
communications management in a variety of senings. Ba^ on my experience, I offer an
understanding of consumer behavior from a marketing perspective and how to communicate
with numerous publics on issues of mutual interest. My background is not specific to some
of the specific engineering, legal or construction orientations necessary to the Planning
Commission. On the contrary, perhaps I offer a business-oriented perspective to the mmy
important issues before the Commission, including a healthy dose of experience in relating to
the public in a variety of situati
My education includes a Master’s degree and I am currently a community faculty member at
Metro Slate University in marketing communications. I have held key positions in
professional trade associations, including the American Gas Association and the Mmnesota
Blue Flame Gas Association. My civic and volunteer activities include Big Brothers and Big
Sisten of Greater Minneapolis. We Can Ride. Sierra Club. Minnesou Artists Association,
Twin Cities Waiercolor Society and Save the Luce Line Area Committee.
My reasons for wanting to serve on the Planning Commission include the desire to explore
opportunities to creatively balance the need for economic growth with the environment in a
manner is consistent with the quality of life we enjoy as Orono residents. I have become
somewhat familiar with the Orono Comprehensive Plan and believe it provides a framework
for finding ways to strike the right balance.
No doubt the most significant issue facing our community is the proposed expansion of
Highway 12. I believe residents in both our state and our community will look to us for the
resolution of this important issue. In my role as a corporate executive in the energy
industry, I have experience in consensus building, balancing growth with the environmem
and communicating with various publics. I would like to put this experience to use on the
Planning Commission, particularly as it relates to this project.
