Boring ST-2 encountered fine to medium sand to sandy
loam to the 8 foot depth, sandy loam to the 14 foot depth, silt
loam to ;’]e 19 foot depth, sandy loam to the 22 foot depth, and
sandy clay loam to the 70 foot depth. Penetration resistances
in both borings ST-1 and ST-2 were rather low to a depth of 14
to 15 feet. They ranged from 3 to 9 blows per foot with an
average penetration of 5 blows per foot. This indicates that
these soils are rather soft. Penetration resistances in the sandy
clay loams ranged from 7 to 15 blows per foot with an average
resistance of 12 blows per foot. This indicates that these soils
are rather stiff.
Probing the borings immediately after completion, the water level
was found to be at a depth of 1 foot below the existing ground
surface. This corresponds to the elevation of the adjacent lake.
Water levels should be expected to fluctuate with the lake
elevation.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The information which you furnished us indicates that a launching
pier for the North Star Marina will be constructed at the above
referenced site. Conversations with Mr. Jacus indicated that
a design incorporating piling for the foundation of the launching
pier would be the most logical. The use of the piling would eliminate
the need for total dewatering of the excavation which would be
necessary in order to place footings on the lake bottom.
For purposes of estimating the piling lengths which would be
required to support the launching pier, the following assumptions
were made:
1. timber piles of a 20-ton capacity would be used.
2. piles to have an average diameter of 12 inches and
a tip diameter of 7 inches.
sofi §mctmnmimc sgf. §mc
4.
ri
4
J
• ^
In i
the
samp
17 f
mean
will
pier
deve:
be d]
ST-2,
Based
borin
are b
level
there;
888 ii
soil i
vary v
betwec
.
