The students also have a lot <br />of fwi at canro • dwe's always tomediing to make, or a mess lo help clean-up! This year we've had <br />two Pioneer ump sessions, a one-day camp January 25, and a three day camp the first week of <br />MMch. <br />Winter Play Day was the title of the January program and fun and games were the order of the <br />day. The students prepared venison stew and buttermilk biscuits for their lunch that day. while Linda <br />McGinty and Liz CXson talked widi them about pioneer life. Once the chores were out of the way it <br />was time to play. Bill Cadey. a great entertainer and storyteller, spent the afternoon with the students <br />MloiMDes nom the "good old days”, and of course there was time to playteaching them sonp and <br />outside in our Minnesota snow! <br />Pioneer Canqp in Match was a \onmet program, which allowed for a more in-depth study of the <br />past The studknts qtent one morning ante farm of Hunk Scherer learning about sausage-making <br />They also loured the tractor bam and visited with die herd 0( cows. We had hoped to learn how to tap <br />sugar nubile trees, bu the weMher was too cold for the sq> lo be running. Tom Geelan stopped in to <br />visit the students with his marioiieM e of Abnlmn Uncofat It was amazing how much work goes into <br />making a puppet and how hard kiBMl ba tohMpdm Mringi foon getting tangled up. <br />Studenu modeled ckshing from <br />museum displays for AdiA <br />History Ihqr. Sarah Maiser, Kim Bilick <br />and Elizabeth Nadeau. <br />The other activity we all participated in was the creating, directing and acting in an <br />improvisational play. The play was the story of the Wolsfeld Family as they moved from the Old <br />World to Minnesota. The students were divided into four groups and each group was one act of the <br />play. Act One was in the Vitorian Room, where the family made the decision to move to North <br />America. The Music Room vs as the scene of Act Two, where the family was waiting at the steamboat <br />launch fOT the trip up the Mississippi River to St. Anthony. Act Three was in the General Store, where <br />the family bought the provisions ^y thought they'd need at their new homestead. The final scene. <br />Act Four, took place in the log schoolhouse (which had been transformed into a pioneer family home) <br />where the family was finally settled in and entertaining their neighbors.
