TO:
FROM:
DATS:
Mayor and City Council
Ron Moorse, City Administrator
May 5, 1993
/.
counolhsim
MAY 1 0 1993
CnYOfOMNO
SUBJECT: West Hennepin Pioneer Museum (Marge Gasch) Presentation
Regarding the Former City Council Chambers Building
Marge Gasch has presented a proposal to City staff concerning the
preservation and relocation of the former Council Chambers
building. The proposal is as follows;
1. Relocate the Council Chambers building to the northwest
corner of the new city facilities property.
2. Develop a shared parking arrangement with the school
district for use of the church building parking lot.
3. The building would be used to display items related to
the history of Orono. The building would be readily
available to students as well as the general public.
4. Funding for this project would be obtained from a number
of sources both public and private.
5. One proposed funding source is the sale of one building
site at the current location of the council chambers
building. A portion of the proceeds would go toward the
expenses related to the relocation of the building.
Staff's response to the prop, sal was as follows:
1. The City Council does not currently have plans to
demolish the city council building.
2. The Crystal Bay neighborhood residents have suggested the
building could be used for a park related use in its
current location.
3. The proposal for relocating the building to the new city
property would have to be reviewed by the Council.
4. The Council is currently weighing two other options for
the use of the Crystal Bay property including the site of
the council chambers building. One option is to retain
all of the property for public use. The other option is
to sell a portion and use the proceeds to assist in
funding of the new city facilities project.
Ms. Gasch has requested that the Council respond to item #1 of her
proposal - relocating the council chambers building to the new city
property so that she knows whether to proceed with the other items
in her proposal.
