A burgeoning
demand for hockey ice time has developed over the last
several years at all available arenas in the Metro area and
surrounding region. This demand comes from virtually all
youth and high school hockey organizations and has been
enhanced by the growth of girls' hockey programs throughout
the state. In addition, figure skaters and other community
users continue to require substantial ice time. Outdoor ice
at city parks and lakes is not a reasonable substitute
outlet for the demand.
The increasing likelihood that an Orono high
school girls' hockey team will start play next fall or the
year after, without any ice time now available anywhere, has
strengthened the focus on our efforts.
We have been evaluating three potential developments:
an expansion of the Pond Arena in Mound, as a
joint project with the Mound youth hockey
association
a new arena on the site recently ceded by
Orono to Wayzata, as a joint project with the
Wayzata youth hockey association
a new arena north of the high school on the
Orono schools campus, developed by our
association
Mark Engebretson President 475-3460
