Newsletter #92 April. 1991 Pa^e 10 <br />A Bit of Orono History by Marie Gorman <br />Orono bccotues a Village. <br />As a village. Orono has a MayOT and four Trustees. The other Officials rem^n the same. In <br />1962 some Officials axe appointed instead of elected. An Attorney and an Engm^r have been add^ <br />The Consubk is leplaced^by the Chief of Police and the Assessor is also the Building Inspector. In <br />that Inspector is a separate Official and a Planning Commissioner shows up. <br />In 1967 a Park Commissioner has been added. In 1968 the Trustees ate called Council Members. In <br />1973 ^h^^s^uf^’ City. In 1980-1981 a City Planner is listed. It is imf^ssiblc to <br />list the names of all who have held these offices in our newsletter, but those names that ine known are <br />Ustea in the Orono Centennial Book. The Orono Books are soil available at the Pioneer Museum. <br />There arc three monuments at the Old Town Hall The first one honors those from the area <br />who served our nation in the First World War and their names arc listed. It w^ erected by the <br />Women s Club in 1917-1918. The second one honors Dr. Newhall for his dedicated work and help to <br />this community. This was put up in 1937. The third monument commemorates the 100th year of <br />Orono. It was erected as part of the Centeruiial Celebration. <br />Constructed prior to electricity and running water and first heated by logs in a ^^belUed stove, <br />the Orono Town Hall is from another era. Oheve was still no runmng water m Je building the <br />last council meeting was held in Occember 1992; you had to get the key tor the building next dwrj It <br />has outlived its time as a councU chamber but stiU retains us quaint charm and historical signiticancc. <br />(Information and pictures for the Old Orono Town Hall articles courtesy of \^0>A archives. The p^tem this year is <br />called "Double 9-Patch", chaiming traditional quilt in navy blue a^ muted reds. The quilt top put <br />together in Februarv at an all-day Piecing Bee' and the hand-quilting contmucs at the .Museum. The <br />quilt is scheduled to be raffled-off at the WHCPA Annual Meeting in August.
