AGENDA ITEM

Prepared By: J. Lemons Reviewed By: NJD Approved By:

1. Purpose. The purpose of this action item is to seek approval to hire a full-time building
maintenance/custodian employee within the Parks and Facilities Department and to begin the process of
recruiting the new employee.

2. Background. The current arrangement for building maintenance/custodial work falls to a part-time
position to maintain City Hall, the Police Department, and Public Works. With the addition of the new
public works building and future fire station, there is a need to increase the position to a full-time role. In
addition to the increased responsibilities, the current part-time custodian has indicated a desire to retire at
the end of November 2023.

3. Recruitment. The building maintenance/custodian position is critical to meet maintenance and
custodial needs of the city owned facilities. The selection process for the vacant position will involve
advertising the position, application screening, an interview panel, and reference checking. Upon
completion of the process, a candidate will be presented to the council for consideration for appointment.

4. Position Description. The position description details a wide range of tasks to maintain the city
facilities and grounds. The position will be a Grade 3 position in the Compensation Plan for Local 12
employees.

5. Timeline. The timeline for the process is as follows:
When What
6 November 2023 Advertise Position
17 November 2023 Review Applications
20-24 November 2023 Interviews
27 November 2023 Council Approval/Appointment
28 November 2023 New Employees First Day

6. Funding. The position was vetted by the City Human Resources committee and budgeted for in the
2024 Parks Operating Budget. For the remainder of November and December 2023, we plan to use
uncommitted seasonal worker salary funds.

7. Staff Recommendation.
