Description of Request:n c m-'W(Construct a 490 SJ. family room addition, replacing Misting hardcover surfacing and OTnnecting the existing home with the detached guest house.The house was designed 25 yesi s ago in 1964 by John Howe, a noted American architect who studied and worked alongside Frank Lloyd Wright as his closest associate for 27 years until his death. Wright s influence is evidenced in manyof Howe's designs. The home at 755 Tonkawa was originally designed for Mr. and Mrs. George R. Johnson. It was Howe’s first project on Ws own after leaving Taliasen Associates, and was key in bringing him to Minnesota. Not only is it a one-of-a kind unique design, but the construction materials (brick, windows, doors, etc.) are all custom made for this project. A major concept of the Wrighlian design approach is the marriage of architecture with the site. The location of this home and it's relationship to the surrounding terrain are an important part of the overall design. The existing structures are now part of the site, just like an Oak tree. The famUy room addiUon. as well as the guest house, were originaUy designed ^ as integral parts of the loul design. The Rogers purchased the home with the understanding that they would work with John Howe to complete this project, his first, and ironically, his last. 2. Hardship - The location of the existing home and detached guest house dictate the lot^tion of the proposed connecting family room addition which was originaUy designed as part of the home. Respect for the architectural style and existing circulation patterns require this positioning. 3. Unusual Prop.
