Ms. Mabusth
I am writing to foflow up «jr telephone conversation about the proposed improvements at the North
Arm/Hendrickson Bridge pubTic access s9e The proposed project is being joindy funded by the
Hennepin County Department of Environmental Management and the Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources TraBs and Waterways Unit. Enclosed is a plan for your review
The goal of the project is to improve the existing shore fishing area and to better manage the
storrrrwater on the site. The shore fishing area upgrade will include meeting the standards of the
Americans with Disabilities Act The proposed plan removes a significant amount of existing asphalt
surface and provides a vegetative fBter strip along the lake edge. Three sedimentation infiltration areas
and the proposed native planting will help improve water quality. The vegetation will also visually screen
the parking area from the lake and provide shade to the anglers
This project provides an opportunity to demonstrate the restoration of a more natural and ecol.'gically
s‘«’sitive riparian edge By reintroducing a filter strip of native riparian vegetation water quality will be
improved by filtering out contaminates including nitrates arxl phosphorous that lead to excessive aquatic
plant growth. This example could motivate lakeshore owners to review ther own lake shore
management and consider replacing some of their hard surfaces and mowed areas with natural lake
edge vegetation m order to help improve the quality of the lake
Last summer the county and the DNR completed a similar improvement ad)acent to Coffee channel in
the city of Spring Park. The project is an example of an improved recreational opportunit/ on Lake
Minnetonka with a more ecologically sensitive design
I would appreciate your review the enclosed plan and then I would like you to provide me with your
comments.
Water Recreation Program Coordinator
Trails and Waterways Unit
DNR Building - 500 Lafayette Road
St Paul, Minnesota 55155-4052
(612) 297-2798
c.
