A second compares public
service costs for the three
442ptions
Sta^ ^Iso are preparing
community-level forecasts of
populationNind households for
each option, ^he studies and
the forecasts are expected to be
completed in tne next few
months \
a IMPRESSIONSV FROM
COMMUNITY MEETINGS AND
TOURS ^
\
Here is some of what the Council
ts finding: \
• The region s economic sphere
IS much larger than seven
counties The severvcounty
area, plus a number |^of
surrounding counties, make up
the region’s “real" econorpic
engine For example, roughly
hall the workers in three counties
just across the St Croix River in
Wisconsin commute to the TUin
Cities area In counties dir
to the north, that figure
about 50 percent
directly
is^also
• People are moving la^Jhcr out.
osi>ecially where thoie is qood
Stplefiib€r 1995
highway accessibility and
attractive amenities Reasons
cited by local officials include
aime in the seven county area
(or the perception of it),
inai
det
ruf
riT” 1C
■"
t .j.
‘ ^ m
ta*p«yf f|. ^4/t 1; incf4»flnoiy i
reluctant .to; approve facilities «
needed to accommodate rising
enrollments.
e Growing numbers of large,
expensive homes costing
$300,000 and up are being built
in developing suburbs and rural
areas. Council forecasts
suggest that the baby-boomers
buying those homes today will
be followed by a generation of
only half its size, making it
difficult for aging boomers to sell
these homes when they so
desire
• Some cities want growth, but
increasing numbers of cities
don't Tfiis challenges the
notion of a uniformly expanding
ring of development around the
region
• Redevelopment opportunities
exist in the inner cities and
subuibs, but pollution cleanup
and road and other infrastructure
improvements make the task
difficult To be clleclivo,
redevelopment needs to be
linked with job training,
education and public salety
improvements
• Flighway capacity is an issue
in every part of the region
