I have had a
lifelong interest in nature, wildlife and the environment, yet respect the challenges faced
by Orono as a developing community. The Parks Commission plays an important
advisory role in helping the City Council balance the pressures of development and
preservation.
The City’s 1994 recreational study clearly showed that residents have a passion for
outdoor activities. It w'ould be a privilege to help facilitate access and use of Orono's
parks and recreation areas - some ot the City’s least recognized assets. As a professional
communicator I could perhaps help raise public awareness of Orono's existing outdoor
resources and generate support for any new parks.
I have held a number of volunteer positions over the years. None has excited me as much
as the prospect of serving on the Orono Parks Commission. It would be a great privilege
and a rare opportunity.
Mv view on the role of the Parks Commission
To serve the citizens of Orono
To enhance the ability of the City Council to govern, by gathering information and
making recommendations
To support City policies and, upon request, to develop new ones
To work closely with staff in administering City policies
To listen to and solicit input from Orono residents
To interact with parks authorities on the municipal, county, state and federal levels,
whose policies impact the City of Orono
