Request for Council Action continued <br />page 2 of 2 <br />April 21, 1995 <br />Highway 12 Safety Improvement Project <br />There are thiw major MSA roadway construction projects planned over the Mxt <br />These are the Highway 12 safety improvement project. County Road 6 at Highway \2 and <br />Watertown Road, and Femdale Road. It is staffs understanding that the Council s prioritization <br />of these three projects is as follows: <br />1. County Road 6 (cost estimate $500.(XX)+) <br />2. Highway 12 safety improvement project ($275,(XX)) <br />3. Femdale Road ($450,000) <br />If .he MSA Dfoiects are prioritized in this way. and the Highway 12 project is funded in 1995, <br />over $650 000 would be available for the County Road 6 project in 1996. If the city * ^ <br />Siunry Road 6 require the entire balance available, the Femdale Road project would have to be <br />delayed for several years. <br />RirsurTtKO^endation that the Highway 12 project be authorized, and that ^ <br />funded using $275,000 of MSA funds. Although the costs are higher ^anticipated ^ <br />will veo- significantly improve the safety and traffic flow on “‘ghway *2. Given tte <br />increasingly limited transportation funding, it is staffs r^ommendauon that ty <br />advantage of this current opportunity to have Highway 12 improved. <br />The existing Highway 12 roadway will continue to be the major traffic route thiOTgh Orono for <br />at least the^next 10 years. If highway constraction fundmg is not unproved, the turn •“* <br />any additional improvements to Highway 12 could extend well beyond 10 y^. <br />probable time line, it is important that the safety improvement project move ahead at this tune. <br />rOlJNCn. ACTION REQUESTED: <br />Motion to adopt resolutions approving the Highway 12 traffic signal agreement and the Highway <br />construction agreement, and authorizing the Mayor to sign the agreements.
