Looby Requesting the City of Orono to be a
Partner in the Community Center Survey
Information Sheet Concerning the Community Center Survey
A portion of the proceeds of the capital project bond referendum passed by the Westonka Sc^l
District was to be used to upgrade the old school building adjacent to the District Offices. The
building is currently being used to house several social service agencies, the Chamber of
Commerce, and some school district uses. A committee to determme the most effective way of
using the ftmds allocated for the upgrade of the community center building have determmed that
the current building is not worth the investment of the approximately $2 million inc’ ded in the
bond referendum for upgrading the building.
The Committee has suggested to the School Board that the Board may want to determine whether
there is an interest on the part of the residents of the school district to replace the current
community center building, and potentially the current district office building, with a new
community center which would incorporate significant recreational facUities. One of the first
steps in this decision process is to conduct a survey of the residents of the school district to
determine the level of support for such a facility. Michael Looby, Director of Community
Education and Personnel Services for the Westonka Public Schools has requested an opporwmty
to make a short presentation to the Council regarding the proposed survey. The School Distnct
is requesting that the City of Orono agree to be a partner in the Community Center survey,
which would involve providing a letter of support concerning surveying residents of Orono who
are also residents of School District #277 .
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
Motion to approve/deny the Westonka Public Schools request for an indication of support by the
city for a Community Center survey.
