28I2S Woodside Road
Shorewood, Mn 55331
April 14, 1995
To; The Orono City Council
Recognizing that you have a public hearing on April 24 concerning the closure of Old
Beach Road, I wanted to write you to register strong support for such a closure.
I live in Shorewood and prior to the temporary closing, used Old Beach Road every
evening between 4:30 PM and 5 30 PM as a shon cut between my work east of Wayzata
and my home. Since that temporary closure, my route home has taken me west on County
Road 15 and then south on County Road 19.
While driving on the short cut b the past I always felt guilty about essentially driving on a
local street to save a few seconds, as I once lived m Deephaven on a local street used
mostly by others. Now that the street has been closed, I have two other observations.
1. It is much safer entering County Road 19 from a stop light at County Road 15 than
from Old Beach Road. The sight Unes at Old Beach Road and County Road 19 were
terrible, and it was particularly hazardous m the wmter.
2. It is just as fast, and m many cases faster gomg to the stop light than takmg the short
cut. This is because I always get through the stop light the first time, wdiereas by taking
the short cut I often times had to wait for north-south traffic on County Road 19 or for
cars ahead of me to turn left of County Road 19.
In the mterest of my safety and for those people who live on Old Beach Road, I urge you
to keep the Road closed.
Smeerely,
/
Tom Johnson
