More recently resrdents on Old Beach
Road have expressed renewed concerns regarding traffic levels and safety. Cit> staff have
worked with the County Highway Department staff to determine the extent of the problem and
to identify solutions.
Problems
1. Traffic safety problem on Old Beach Road
a. Causes
1.) Traffic volume
a. ) 3600 cars per day
b. ) This is a very high volume of traffic for a residential street and is
substantially more than on any of Orono’s collector streets, which have
been designed and constructed to handle the higher levels of iraffic.
Old Crystal Bay Road:
Willow Drive:
Brown Road;
2500 trips per day
2300 trips per day
2000 trips per day
2.)Street design and layout
a. ) Old Beach Road is a residential street design. The roadway was
designed only to carry local traffic (neighborhood traffic). The residential
street standard calls for a total width of 30 feet, including shoulders. Old
Beach Road does not meet this standard, particularly at its northern end.
The collector road design standard calls for a total width of 40 feet.
b. ) Old Beach Road has a hill that causes a sight-distance safety problem
particularly if traffic volumes are high or if speeds exceed 20 miles per
hour.
