MINUTES OF THE ORONO PLANNING COMMISSION <br />MEETING 1 lELD ON JULY 17, 1995 <br />(#9) #2040 DOUG OLSON, 2601 WEST LAFAYETTE ROAD - VARIANCE - <br />PUBLIC HEARING 9:00-9:16 P.M. <br />The Certificate of Mailing and Affidavit of Publication were noted. <br />Jim Smith represented the applicam. <br />Mabusth reported that the application is to remove and replace existing concrete patio <br />around the (x>ol area in the 0-75' 2one with interlocking pavers in a sand bed TIte City <br />considers this hardcover, while the DNR considers it softcover 170 s.f of patio and 65 <br />s f of stepping pads will be restored to grass. The applicant has provided an updated <br />survey locating the pool and patio in relation to the shoreline. The closest portion of the <br />patio to the lake is at 24' The proposed hardcover shows a reduction of 0.76% or 235 s.f <br />Mabusth said the property has over 800' of shoreline There is an existing walkway to the <br />dock area Considerable hardcover has already been reduced with the removal of the <br />15x15' boathouse foundation and the walkway around the peninsula area. The property is <br />a seasonal residence for the applicant Future goals are a new entry and a bedroom <br />addition over the garage It is the pr.nticant's intention to convert residence to their <br />primary residence it was purct;„ «eC m i994 and has seen major cleaning up of the <br />property since that time. The shoreline has been riprapped. A hillside along the lake has <br />been planted Plastic underlayment has been removed and replanting has occurred. J. <br />Smith said the applicant has spent $120,000 in clean up. <br />J. Smith said the concrete patio under consideration has cracked and the replacement is <br />part of the clean up project. This patio area is the closest hardcover surface by the po<^ <br />and has been reduced in size. <br />J Smith noted that the driveway serves three homes and also as a turnaround. The <br />owners would like to change this. The new entry will eliminate the driveway turnaround. <br />Updated hardcover calculations and survey will be done when more improvements are <br />made. <br />Rowlette recommended the removal of the stepping stones to the dock area. J. Smith said <br />the stones to the dock make logical sense, where the other stones did not. J.Smith fiirther <br />noted that 300' have already been taken out in stepping stones and about 2000 s.f in total <br />hardcover removal throughout the clean-up process. The applicant's willingness to <br />remove hardcover and clean up the property was noted. <br />J. Smith asked for clarification on the approach to the pool area. Other than through the <br />side lawn area, the patio is the main approach to the pool area.
