LAND USE JUNE, 1980 _~^ <br />I AND USE GOALS AND POLICIES <br />Orono's Land Use Plan is based upon the following goals <br />and policies which in turn have been actively developed <br />by Orono residents over the last 25 years. <br />LAND USE GOALS <br />1. TO REINFORCE ORONO'S ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION COMMITMENT. <br />2. TO MAINTAIN THE HISTORIC IDENTITY AND CHARACTER OF THE SEPARATE <br />URBAN AND RURAL NEIGHBORHOODS. <br />3. TO PROVIDE APPROPRIATE PLACES FOR A VARIETY OF LOCAL RESIDENTIAL, <br />EDUCATIONAL, RECREATIONAL, INDUSTRIAL AND NEIGHBORHOOD COMMERCIAL <br />ACTIVITIES. <br />4. TO PROTECT NEIGHBORHOODS FROM ENCROACHMENT OF INCOMPATIBLE LAND USES. <br />5. TO COORDINATE ORONO’S LAND USES WITH THAT OF NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES. <br />6. TO COORDINATE LAND USES AND DEVELOPED DENSITY WITH THE FINANCIAL AND <br />PHYSICAL CAPABILITIES OF THE CITY AND ITS CITIZENS TO PROVIDE THE <br />NECESSARY PUBLIC FACI ITIES AND SERVICES. <br />GENERAL LAND USE POLICIES <br />1. THE METROPOLITAN URBAN SERVICE AREA (MUSA) IS FIXED. <br />Orono's Urban Service Area (MUSA) and Sewer Service <br />Area (MSSR) are fixed by this and the other elements <br />of the Community Management Plan and are legally <br />described by Resolution of the City Council as shown <br />on Map No. 6. <br />2. ORONO'S LAND USE PLANS WILL BE BASED UPON ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION <br />POLICIES. Land use and development must assure the <br />conservation, protection and preservation of sensitive <br />environmental resources in accordance with the goals <br />and policies of the Environmental Protection Plan. <br />/and use policies will encourage the wise use and <br />management of natural resources while prohibiting their <br />misuse, abuse, overuse or explo:.tation. <br />CMP 4-12
