Hock
Executive Director
Miimetonke Center of Arts 9 Educetien
P.O. Box 1S8
Crystal Ar/, ittnnesota, SS323
Dear Ms. Hock;
Previous docuwntation of your jiterided usane of the 'XHd Hill School" building
has inplied adult education. Hoeever, in your last lettor you speciftcally state
that "children" will also be taught there. This oo^>licatas the Building Code
requirements significantly. In particular, "«iy building used for educrtional
purposes throu^ the 12^ grade oy less than SO persons for more than lz hours
r ^Ic or four hours WW one dy’Wiist be classified as a school, Occupancy,
roup C'Z.
The cduequences of this are as follows:
1. UBD 802C ' All janitors closets aust be one hour fire enclosed and no class
for students laider the 3rd grade level can be on tiie second floor.
The roof must be fire retardant (treated shingles wst be used).
An mroved fire alarv system «ist be installed.
The oaseaent stairs must exit directly to the exterior of the
building and camot pass throu^ the entry corridor.
All exit dorrs from any corridor must be equipped with panic hard*
2. UBC 809
3. UBC 810
<4. UBC 3317
> 5. UBC 3317
ware
6. UBC 3802 • A fire sprinkler system must be installed in the basement if the
floor area exceods ISOO square feet.
7. Table S*B> A one hour fire separation must be constructed between those areas
considered F«2 (adult vocational) and those areaa considered C*2
(children's educational).
8. There nay be additional requirements of the State Electrical Inspector.
Some of these restrictions may seen severe, but I aa certain you will agree that the
intention is the safety cf any children who would bo using the building. Even though
you nay not have many children at one tine, the Code requirements, and the hatards,
are still present.
