Tlie
Minnesoiw outine Assessment Method (MinRAM) was used to evaluate Lhe floral diversity and inlegnty
of the wetland.
The wetland community contained predominately american elm with a groundlayer dominated by hep
sedge and bristle pinkweed. Reed canary grass and cattail comprise less then iO percent of the wetland
and aie is»)la‘.ed m one end. MinRAM defines a High Quality Hardwoi.xi Swamp as haviny, Lho following
characteristics:
Slancii undisturbed or minimally disturbed by anificial drainage, grayjng, logging, impoundment, jilling,
etc. Seedtnigs and/or saplings of native tree species evident Indicating i •’generat ’on. Groundlayer
composed of native grasses, sedges, ferns and/or forbs. Box elder, buckthorn, and/or reed canary grass, if
present, each have less than 10 percent cover.
Thi.s wetland meets MinRAM High Quality Hardwood Swamp standards. Excavation of this wetland
would greatly degrade the system which exists. High Quality Hardw ood Swartips arc not prevalent in
much of the metro area and usually are preserved when p*ossible.
Tlie upland area between the wetland and the road contains stands of buckthorn. Buckthcni is an exotic,
unctee’.rabic licc. si:, aggretii* e aiid cAcn cut eon.potcs fuitivc wcir.dla.-.d spcc'.ec, which have li'ghei
va'ues for wildlife. If they still want a pond, I would suggest placement of a small pond in the adjacent
upland area, between the wetland and the road A pond at this location will eliminate the buckihom. Site
ccnsiiaints will likely limit them to a shallow pond with emergent wetland plants, such as caltall, across tlie
entire surtacc area. If a pond was constructed in the upland aiea surrounding the wetland, erosion control
should be required, to protect the Hardwood Swamp.
Please contact me if you have any questions or need fuilher assistance.
Sincerely,
BONESTROOJROSENE.'T^NDERLIK & ASSOCIATES.
