In his case that would in
clude Allina Health System,
HealthPartners and ReliaStar Fi
nancial Corp.
Popham Haik spokeswoman
"''errie Wheeler declined to com
ment on whether the firm will try
to reconstitute its health care
group or replace the departing
employees. The firm issued a pre
pared statement from President
Paul Koches that said it has
adopted a program to cut costs,
reduce debt and focus on certain
core practices.
"While it is unfortunate that
certain shareholders who did not
agree with the program have cho
sen to pursue their indhidual in
terests elsewhere, the vast major
ity of the shareholders remain
confident of the firm’s abilitv to•
continue its long history of suc
cess and client service," the state
ment added.
The departures at Popham
Haik began last fall when the firm
fired some attorneys and support
staff. Others later jumped ship
because they feared the cutbacks
meant that the firm was in seri
ous financial trouble, something
Popham Haik officials have
denied.
The move by Halleland and his
colleagues brings the number of
attorneys at the firm to about 150
compared witli 234 last fall.
But perhaps ntore important,
this is the first time such a large
group has left en masse to estao-
lish a firm of their own. That’s
jarticularly significant, as are the
osses of the entire health care
group and such high-profile at
torneys as Lewis, according to
one legal-community veteran.
"Mv sense is that if the heart
of [Popham Haik) has not been
removed, certainly a major organ
has,” he said. “This is a very big
deal."
SSLesSeSNSPKTClUff fiS8URBlS«0IBIIYSBIli
MCIL'OCS
LflT.SLUlW
h:oc€
^0XHKjc-
•TrXTX>
AS low AS
mSPB!
S5 i?LCHLUI'JR
•Moo.':-:-•wcncN-iecm
•mT3iv:=“
36 MO lEASE!
