WEST HENNEPIN RECYCUNG COMMISSION Greenfielrt-Independence-Long Lake-Loretto-Maple Plain-Medina-Orono 65 Stubbs Bay Road Maple Plain, MN 55359 476-001 2 6 August 1996 To: Ron Moorse For: The Mayor and City Council City of Orono Yard waste Dear Council members; Beginiung in April, phone calls from Orono residents regarding yard waste have increased significantly from past years 1, personally, have fielded over 40 calls The Orono city staff also confirms a moderate to heavy increase in resident calls regarding yardwaste, most especially brush Many callers are irritated. Residents are advised to take their brush (and leaves and grass when a city collection has expired) to various yard waste sites in Maple Grove, or contact their hauler for a special pick-up These options arc adequate and some are in the hands of private enterprise where they need to be, yet do not address a sincere interest in having locally available compost and woodchips As Orono and other West Hennepin cities continue to develop, I believe interest in ‘completing the yard waste cycle’ will grow' Orono ’s Public Works Department, among others, has worked long and hard to locate land for a permanent yard waste facility for the westerly most cities in Hennepin County. These efforts have not been successful. Perhaps an acceptable site, preferably operated by private enterprise, will never surface. However, there may be opportunities in the future. This letter was intended to: 1.) inform you that Orono residents have expressed a growing interest in more convenient yard waste disposal and end-product availability; and 2.) reactivate any thoughts or information you may have relative to possible yard waste facility sites.
