I a^ Minnesota Oapartmant of Transportation
Matropolitan Division
Waters Edge
1500 West County Road B2
Roseville. MN 55113
July 19. 1996
Mr. John H. Merideth
3685 Watertown Road
Orono, Minnesota 55359
Dear Mr. Merideth:
I am writing in response to your letter of July 1, 1996 concerning the Minnesota Department of
Transportation's (Mn/DOT) study of Trunk Highway (TH) 12 in the Long Lake and Orono area.
Thank-you for your letter. Mn/DOT welcomes citizen input, and we appreciate the opportunity to
respond.
In April of 1996 Mn/DOT announced that we were no longer considering four-lane expansion of TH
12. Instead we announced our intention to proceed with a project proposed to build a new two-lane
highway adjacent to the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks in Long Lake and Orono. The City of
Long Lake has proposed we look at two additional alternatives, one of which includes a new two-lane
highway bypassing Long Lake to the south. Two neighborhood groups from Long Lake and Orono
have proposed that Mn/DOT study an another alternative which includes a three-lane roadway on the
current TH 12 alignment. Under this proposal the center lane is a reversible lane carrying eastbound
traffic during the morning hours and west bound traffic during the evening peak period.
Mn/DOT is in the process of evaluating each of these three alternatives, determining if they are
feasible to carry forward. We anticipate an announcement in late August stating which alternatives we
will carry forward and what that study process will entail. If any of these alternatives our added to our
study we will hold public meetings and have a 30-day comment period immediately following our
announcement.
Again, thank-you for your input. If you have additional questions or comments please do not hesitate
to call Patti Loken (582-1293) or myself (582-1296).
Sincerely, . )
Tom O’Keefe, P.E. -------—'
Planning Engineer
Mn/DOT Metropolitan Division
cc:
Governor Ame Carlson
Senator Gen Olson
Representative Todd Van Dellen
(3rono City Council
An equal opportunity employer
i
