* *> <br />Request for Council Action Continued <br />page 2 of 2 <br />July 2, 1997 <br />Saga Hill Park Land Acquisition <br />Option #1.Follow through with the grant and the park land acquisition based on the <br />acceptance of some level of restriction on the use of the property. <br />a. ) Advantages <br />1. ) This would enable the acquisition of the land for park land to <br />proceed. <br />2. ) This would provide the city with authority to protect the natural <br />and scenic resources of the area. <br />3. ) The city’s acquisition of the land, even with restrictions, could <br />provide as much or more actual and potential flexibility regarding <br />future uses than if the land was simply purchased by a private <br />developer for residential development. <br />b. ) Disadvantages <br />1.) This would restrict the city’s flexibility in regard to the use of the <br />property to meet future needs. <br />Option #2 Reject all restrictions and withdraw the grant application. <br />A. <br />B. <br />Advantages <br />1.) General flexibility regarding the use of the land is maintained. <br />Disadvantages <br />1. ) Without public ownership of the land, it would become difficult to <br />preserve the unique natural and scenic resources of the area and to <br />preserve access to these features by the general public. <br />2. ) An opportunity to preserve a significant amount of land for park use <br />would be lost. <br />Staff Recommendation <br />Staff recommends Option #1. <br />COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED <br />Motion to indicate whether the city should continue its participation in the acquisition of the Saga <br />Hill park land; and, if so, to indicate the general conditions under which the city participation <br />would continue.
