DRAFT
COMMENTS REGARDING THE HIGHWAY 12 DECISION
necessar\' future capacity In the TH 12 corridor without this
element.
The city of Orono and its residents fear that an interchange such
as the one proposed will draw traffic to Watertown Road, causing
traffic to grow substantially beyond the amount forecast. This
would not be consistent with the land uses along Watertown Road
or the city’s comprehensive plan.
The initial design and follow up discussions regarding the
connection of Watertown Road to Highway 12 involved a new
access under the railroad tracks to the east of the existing Highway
12 connection. The intersection between Watertown Road and
existing TH 12 could be reconstructed at or near the current
location at a more reasonable cost than at the location proposed.
We believe the projected volumes could he handled at an at-grade
intersection with an acceptable level of service.
Alternative 6 will have substantial impacts on properties located on the south side of the
Burlington Northern Railroad tracks.
3.The two lane limited access roadway may have an adverse impact on traffic-related
businesses due to the high volume of traffic rerouted away from current Highway 12.
Orono Opposes Consideration of Additional Alignments
It has come to our attention that the city of Long Lake has proposed that either (a) a two-lane,
limited access bypass be constructed along the original South (Luce Line) corridor, or (b) a three
component TSM alternative using Watertown Road, existing TH 12, and CSAH 6. The city of
Orono is strongly opposed to continued study of the South corridor because of strong citizen
