Big Woods Discussion <br />March 20, 1997 <br />Page 3 <br />without having municipal sewer available...and, since the remnant is mostly <br />in Medina, Orono cannot independently deal with all the zoning issues... <br />How does the Orono Comprehensive Plan address preservation of woodlands? <br />/ <br />Overall Goals and Policies, Planning Goal #4, Page CMP 2-2: "TO <br />PROTECT AND PRESERVE OUR MANY NATURAL RESOURCES <br />INCLUDING ALL LAKES, CREEKS, MARSHES, WETLANDS, <br />WOODLANDS, GROUNDWATER AND STEEP SLOPES" (emphasis <br />added). <br />Rural Area Goals and Policies, Rural Planning Policy #3, Page CMP 2-7: <br />"RURAL DEVELOPMENTS WILL BE CAREFULLY SCREENED FOR <br />ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY. Most of Orono ’s rural land includes <br />major or minor drainageways and wetlands all intricately tied into Lake <br />Minnetonka. Therefore, each rural development will require particular care <br />to prevent encroachment on these vital resources and to ensure protection of <br />the soil, vegetation and drainage patterns. In addition, consideration will be <br />given to protection of woodlands and special open vistas having general <br />public benefit." (emphasis added) <br />Environmental Protection Goal #8, Page CMP 3-18: "TO PRESERVE A <br />REASONABLE AMOUNT OF NATIVE WOODLANDS AS AN <br />INTEGRAL PART OF ORONO’S HERITAGE." <br />Environmental Protection Goal #9, Page CMP 3-18: "TO PROTECT AND <br />PRESERVE A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF NATURAL WILDLIFE <br />HABITAT IN WOODLANDS AND WETLANDS." <br />Rural Area Policies for Natural Resource Management #2, Page CMP 3-23: <br />"RURAL LAND USE DENSITIES WILL ALLOW MAXIMUM <br />RETENTION OF PRIVATE WOODS AND OPEN SPACE. Low' rural <br />densities will accomodate homesites without affecting the traditional vistas <br />of open fields and woods. The retention of these woodlands and marshlands <br />will then assure permanent habitat for our abundant wildlife." <br />General Land Use Policies #13, Page CMP 4-15:"FUTURE DEVELOPMENT <br />MUST ENHANCE THE ENVIRONMENT.
