The City of Orono is an Equal Opportunity Employer <br /> <br />CITY OF ORONO <br /> <br />Position Title: Assistant Chief <br />Document Date: August 24, 2023 <br />Department: Fire <br />Accountable to: Fire Chief <br />FLSA Status: Non-exempt <br /> <br />Nature of Work <br />The Assistant Chief provides leadership, direction and reviewal of the activities and operations <br />of the firefighters and department including fire suppression, hazardous material mitigation, fire <br />prevention, life safety code compliance, public safety education, emergency medical services and <br />administrative support services. To assist in coordinating assigned activities with other City <br />departments and outside agencies; and to provide highly responsible and complex level of <br />support to the Fire Chief as a member of the Fire Chief’s management team. <br /> <br />Supervision Received and Exercised <br />The Assistant Chief is supervised by the Fire Chief and they supervise the Station Captains. <br />Examples of Work <br />Essential functions listed below are intended as illustrations of the various types of work that <br />may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them if the <br />work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position. <br /> <br />• Responsible for the management, supervision, and administration of all Orono Fire Department fire <br />stations and their personnel, equipment, and apparatus; improves and maintains all stations’ <br />performance and efficiency while setting goals and objectives to meet those of the Fire Chief; ensures <br />that the department requirements are met or exceeded by all stations. <br />• Works jointly with the Deputy Chief of Training, Station Captains and Fire Chief to develop and <br />implement department policies and operating procedures; may assemble and delegate personnel to <br />committees of various types and will direct those at his/her discretion. <br />• Coordinates the attendance records for department related emergency calls; responds directly to <br />emergency scenes, performs size—up, advises incoming companies, and maintains command until <br />relieved by the Fire Chief. May choose at his/her discretion to delegate the command of a scene to an <br />officer of lower rank.
