PARKS, OPEN SPACE, AND TRAILS GOALS Continued <br />THE CITY'S RURAL NATURAL CHARACTER AND OPEN SPACE <br />llie existence of open space, whether publicly owned and open to the public or privately owned, is <br />an important ingredient in the city's rural, natural, open character. The visual amenity provided by <br />both public and private open space is an important part of the city's character. When an undeveloped <br />area of privately owTied land is developed, a portion of the city's rural character is lost as the open <br />space is lost. It is important that key areas of open space be preserved to ensure the preservation of <br />the city's rural, natural, open character. <br />1.PARKS AND OPEN SPACE GOALS <br />A. To provide open space and recreational opportunities diversified enough to serve all <br />Orono residents. <br />B. To protect and preserve natural resource areas and wildlife habitats. <br />C. To preserve Orono's natural, rural, open character. <br />1. ) An area characterized by significant forested area and/or wetlands and/or <br />other open space. <br />2. ) An area that contains large contiguous undeveloped land that provides a <br />sense of plenty of breathing room. <br />D. To preserve open spaces and natural amenities for people to enjoy for nature walks <br />etc. <br />1. ) To preseiA'e natural areas and their attendant open spaces and wildlife to <br />enable residents to feel a part of nature in their daily lives. <br />2. ) To preserve and protect historic or unique natural areas and resources i.e. <br />prairies, woods, lakes, wetlands and natural features. <br />2.Trails Goals <br />A.
