r
Determination of Needs
Summation of truck committee meetings
Over the course of 6 months, approximately 8 members of the Long Lake Fire
Department have spent approximately 75 hours discussing current equipment
needs as well as future equipment needs. These meetings have been held from
October through March on the 4th Wednesday of the month and will continue as a
common meeting time for future vehicle needs. During the first few meetings, the
goal of the committee was to identify immediate needs based on Community
requirements (call types.) We identified an immediate (0-1 year) need for a new
Quick Response Rescue vehicle and a new Utility vehicle. We also identified the
need for a new Pumper witlun the next 3-5 years. During our January meeting, a
conscious decision was made to have the committee focus solely on a li^t rescue
over the next several months. During February, we ^ent approximately 60 hours
visiting several filre departments, including Chaska, Jordan, Mound and Wayzata to
evaluate what they were using for medical only response. We saw a variety of
vehicles, including extend-a-cab pick up trucks, 4 door pick up trucks and full size
rescue units (similar to ours.) In aU cases, vehicles were no more than nine (9)
years old. We also had a rescue unit from North Memorial Hospital come to our
Fire Station. This vehicle was a 1994 Suburban.
Based on viewing these units, as well as further discussion, it was decided in
Febniary to go with a Suburban. During the February meeting, we began to
discuss equipment needs for the vehicle. In addition, we reviewed documentation
received from a Fire Apparatus Vendor, Odyssey, pertaining to design and layout
for a Suburban.
In March, we finalized vehicle requirements and equipment q>ecification lists, with
estimated costs, for the new vehicle. This information is included later in the
presentation materials.
