By applying the step» of their
planning model in meetings with dty
management and council members, TBG
was able to 'ssist Centerville, MN
identify major growth issues while
retaining the small town environment
they determined to be important to their
community. Using the model,
Owatonna, MN was able to validate its
mission statement as well as identify
issues that will maintain Owatonna's
position as a regional center.
Robbinsdale, MN ujxlated its existing
plan and develop>ed a revised list of
issues needing current attention.
The model will next be used to assist
the Bank of Elk River assess their strate
gic position in the banking industry.
"VVe have demonstrated the model is
valid," said Jim Brimeyer, President. "A
good facilitator Ceui assist any organiza
tion through this process to determine
the direction it wants to take in the
future."
The initial Strategic Planning session
usually takes 12 to 16 hours and can be
conducted in full or half-day sessions.
Subsequent update sessions may be
scheduled for a full or half day and are
most beneficial every 18 to 24 months.
During these meetings, the Strategic
Planning model is used to identify
internal environment strengths and
weaknesses, and external environment
opportunities and threats. This evalua
tion identifies the strategic issues the
organization should be addressing
currently. In addition, the membm are
asked to clearly express what the orga
nization is intended to be in the future;
to establish a Vision of Success. Until a
mutual agreement can be reached of
what the issues and Vision are for the
organization, it is impossible to agree on
current actions—or to accomplish long
term goals.
TBG, as an independent facilitator,
provides the objectivity and the ye£tfs of
experience to advance these discussions
in a productive manner. They can assure
a supportive environment to test ideas
and blend the diverse backgrounds of
everyone involved. They can suggest
the optimum use of the talents present,
assign responsibilities, and determine
reasonable deadlines for completion.
The Strategic Planning model will be
described more fully in a futiue issue of
The Brim Report.
