TO;
FROM:
Mayor and City Council
Ron Moorse, City Administrator
DATE:March 19,1997
SUBJECT: Recognition of Bruce and Ruth Dayton for Their Donation of Unique Open Space
Property to the DNR
In the fall of 1996, Bruce and Ruth Dayton donated a substantial amount of property with a value
of several million dollars to the DNR to be preserved as a scientific and natural area. The Council
has indicated its intention to recognize this donation and to express the city ’s appreciation in a formal
or official manner. It was suggested that one method of recognizing the Daytons for their donation
could be the Robert Searles Meritorious Service Award. This is an award for outstanding
contribution by a resident of the Village of Orono to the basic goals of the community in maintaining
and preserving the quality of life for the citizens of Orono.
The award has been given to the following persons:
Robert Searles
Walter Massengale
Norm Paurus
Brad VanNest
Mary Butler
It appears the award is generally given for service to the community over an extended period.
Although the donation of the land was a one-time action rather than service over an extended period,
the Daytons' acquisition of the property with the goal of preserving and protecting it did involve
ongoing efforts over an extended period of time. Tlie establishment of the scientific and natural area
does contribute to maintaining and preserving the quality of life for the citizens of Orono.
