Subdivision in Orono <br />^ . » <br />STANDARDS /d.D s?;-:.*iKicATi:::3 GUirs r'o?. ?:sTi'3Li3:-:i::G <br />73-IPOMi VEGETATIVE COVER. <br />s'- ‘ <br />Definition <br />Establishing: temporary vegetative cover on hig^ silt producing <br />areas created during urban construction activities, Tliis includes <br />the seeding of annual grasses, legumes, email grains or the use <br />of anchored straw or hay mulch. <br />Purpose <br />To afford rapid cover for the control of accelerated runoff ar.d <br />erosion during periods of construction on disturbed areas and <br />until permanent vegetation or other stabilization material can <br />be established. This practice is expected to give protection <br />for a period of 6 to 12 months. <br />Conditions Where Practice Applies <br />On areas of land that are being converted from agricultural or <br />related uses to urban develoiment and when the period of exi>08ure <br />will be at least 60 days but generally less than 12 months. <br />Specifications <br />1, Apply 500 lbs. per acre of 20-10-10 or equivalent fertilizer, <br />2, Incoirporate fertilizer into the top U feet of surface soil by <br />disking or other suitable means, <br />3* Seed one of the following mixtures at the rate shown i)er acre: <br />July 1 to September 15-2 bu, of rye (small grain) <br />April 1 to July 1 - 3 bu, of oats <br />May 20 to July 1 - 30 lbs, grain sorghum <br />30 lbs, Sudan grass <br />Broadcast or drill seed uniformly and cover to a depth of ^ <br />inch to approximately 2 inches, depending on the seeding <br />mixture. Seed can be covered and seedbed firmed by the use <br />of a corrugated cultipacker or other suitable equipment, <br />5, Temporary vegetative cover can be satisfactorily established <br />on subsoils of the hif^er producing soils without the use of <br />mulch, A mulch is recommended for use on adverse soil <br />conditions, <br />6, On areas where permanent seodings are planned, temporary <br />stabilization may be obtained by the use of anchored straw <br />or hay mulch. The mulch material sliDu].d be spread uniformly <br />at a rate of 3|000 to 1»,000 lbs, per acre and anchored with <br />either asphalt, netting, mulch a.nchoring tool or a straigii <br />disc, Permrjiont, seeding mi?:.ures may be overseeded on this <br />I <br />M <br />mulch at a later date.
