What is the National Flood Insurance Program and what is <br />it designed to do? <br />A.®ie program established by Congress in the National Flood <br />Insurance Act of 1968 and expanded in the Flood Disaster <br />Protection Act of 1973 is designed to provide flood <br />insurance at rates made affordable throufi^ a Federal subsidy. <br />In return, communities must adopt and administer local <br />measures that protect lives and new construction from fhture <br />flooding. <br />2. Q. Is the program designed for individuals or communities? <br />A.Both. While Individuals in a participating community may <br />obtain financial protection against flood losses, the <br />community itself enhances the overall value of its flood <br />plains and assures the increased safety of its citizens. <br />3. Q. Who may apply for participation in the program? <br />A.Any community with the authority to adopt and administer flood <br />plain management regulations for the flood-prOne areas within <br />their jurisdiction. <br />Q. What communities should apply for participation in the <br />National Flood Insurance Program? <br />A.All communities that have flood problems, especially those <br />communities that have already been issued maps from the <br />Federal Insurance Administration (PIA) identifying their <br />areas of special flood hazard. <br />i <br />i <br />i <br />I
