Orono Fire Needs Assessment <br />49 | Page <br /> <br />firefighter’s blood pressure every time the pager goes into alert mode.13 With station alerting, <br />you are able to control this spike in blood pressure by alerting the firefighters more subtle. <br />The disinterest in the fire service by the POC firefighters is caused when a firefighter lives <br />farther away from the station and doesn’t make a truck. They can become disinterested in <br />responding if all they are going to do is sit and not use the skills they have trained for. <br />Because the recruitment and retention of volunteers is expected to become more and more <br />difficult and because 45% of the calls for service occur weekdays and non-holidays from 0600 – <br />1800 hours, it is evident that the current staffing model will need to change if we are to <br />continue to provide excellent service to the citizens into the future. All of the models listed <br />below will require significant remodels or expansions of existing facilities including crew <br />quarters for assigned overnight hours. <br /> <br /> <br />13 Paige J.
