Orono Fire Needs Assessment <br />10 | Page <br /> <br />Orono built fire station 2 in 2004 and added it to the long-term contract in 2007. Excelsior Fire <br />opened and operated fire station two due to issues with leadership at Long Lake Fire with their <br />paid-on-call fire chiefs. James Van Eyll was hired as the first full-time fire chief due to these <br />leadership issues. Over the next 15-years, the City of Orono consolidated down their fire <br />service area to just to the Long Lake Fire Department. In 2017, Orono expressed their interest <br />in switching roles with City of Long Lake. Orono and Long Lake have been in negotiations since <br />then. Orono hired a fire chief in December of 2022 and their initial task was a needs <br />assessment of fire and emergency for Orono. <br />
