TEST PORING AND SAMP TNG PROCEDURES
STANDARD PENETRATION - SPLIT SPOON (ASTM D 1586)
A 1-3/8" ID, 2" OD steel sampling tube is driven into the soil with
140 pound weight falling 30". The number of hammer blows required to
drive the sampler 1',after an initial set of ;', is the standard pene-
tration test ("N" value). The "N" value is an indication of the strength
and compressibility of soil.
Split spoon samples normally are taken at intervals of 2k' or 5'.
At 2-' intervals, the depth to contacts between soil layers can be
determined to an accuracy of about 1'. At 5' intervals, the depth to
contacts between soil layers is determined approximately, and the
type of material present between sampling intervals is inferred based
on the action of drilling tools. The bore hole is advanced between
sampling intervals with a flite auger, or a hollow stem auger, or by
rotary drilling. Methods used to stabilize the bore hole include:
hollow stem auger, casing, drillien mud, Revert drilling fluid, or
a plug of paper at the bottom of the hollow stem auger/casing.
AUGER BORINGS
An auger is drilled into the soil. The auger is then spun or retracted,
and samples are taken at the ground surface or off the auger. Using
this method, determination of the depth to contacts between layers
normally is approximate only.
THIN WALL TUBE SAMPLES (ASTM D 1587)
Comparatively undisturbed samples are taken with thin wall tunes which
are pushed hydraulically into soil.
STATIC CONE TESTS
The static cone test entails measuring the force required to push a
steel cone penetrometer into soil. Cone diameters are 1-3/4",2%",and Y.
The apex angle is 60'. The cone is pushed hydraulically at a rate of k"
per second. The static cone bearing pressure, qc, is the total load
divides: by the projected end area of the cone. The static cone bearing
pressure is an indication of the strength and compressibility of soil.
CORING (ASTM D 2113)
Coring is done with a diamond or carbide bit on a double tubed barrel.
1 3/79
