Appendix H <br />Orono SWPPP ǀ 0C1.126140 <br />b) Direct people away from site; divert traffic and pedestrians as necessary. <br />c) Stop the source of spill, if possible. <br />d) Eliminate any potential ignition sources, if possible. <br />3. Identify Hazards <br />a) Identify the spilled material, if possible. <br />b) Note characteristics of material (odor, color, sheen), warning labels, container <br />types, activities that are contributing to incident. <br />4. Assess Conditions <br />a) Ascertain the appropriate first response and need for additional help. <br />b) Note potential threats (fire, explosion, mixing with something else). <br />c) Note resources available to contain the spill. <br />d) Note persons/infrastructure at risk. <br />5. Reporting <br />a) Contact the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Duty Officer at 1-800-422- <br />0798 (toll free) or 651-649-5451 (Metro area), if the spill of any substance or <br />material may cause or has caused pollution of waters of the state. <br />b) Report spills that may cause pollution (toxic, flammable, corrosive, or dangerous <br />industrial chemicals). <br />c) Report petroleum spills of 5 gallons or greater in volume. <br />6. Containment <br />a) Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as boots, gloves, <br />and safety glasses. <br />b) Place berms or available material around perimeter of spill. <br />c) Provide protection of nearest storm water conveyance (inlet, gutter, culvert). <br />d) Apply absorbent material, starting at downstream edge of spill. <br />7. Clean Up <br />a) Only personnel with proper training shall perform clean up. <br />b) Clean small spills according to their Material Safety Data Sheet. <br />c) Do not wash or hose spill into the street or storm drain system. <br />d) Ventilate area and eliminate any sources of ignition. <br />e) Clean spills quickly. <br />f) Use “dry” clean up methods if possible (sweeping, shoveling, scraping). <br />g) Place waste in appropriate containers. <br />h) Dispose of spill material in accordance with State and Federal regulations. <br />i) If personnel with proper training are not available, leave the area and notify <br />emergency responders. <br />8.
