Bnining
315 Silver Meadow Drive
Orono, MN 55356
Dear Mr. Bruning:
I am writing, on behalf of Mayor Jabbour and the Orono City Council, in response to your recent
letter regarding the Highway 12 project. Your letter lists a number of concerns, including the
decision process used to select the corridor and the handling of the area between your property and
the proposed corridor.
The majority of the land in the City of Orono was held hostage for almost 10 years by the v^ous
corridor alternatives proposed for the upgrade of Highway 12. The decision to use the Burlington
Northern Railroad corridor was not a decision arrived at easily or quickly. It was a solution
developed after years of study and a difficult process by the cities of Long Lake and Orono and
Mn/DOT to find a solution that would be acceptable to ^1 parties.
The City Council is very conscious of, and concerned about, the impact of the Highway on the City's
residents and business owners. The City is working diligently to do everything it can, within the
limits of both the legal process and the political process, to limit the impact of the highway. The
picture is always changing; what may not have been possible in the past, may be possible in the
future. When circumstances change to create a new opportunity to respond to resident concerns and
needs, the City takes advantage of the opportunity.
At the meeting held at Clint Miller's home, you indicated a strong desire for an earthen berm
between your property and the railroad/highway. At that time, Clint Miller expressed a desire to
remain in his home. This situation has now changed, as Mr. Miller has indicated he wants his
property to be totally acquired by Mn/DOT. The City has worked with Mn/DOT to change the
preliminary design plan so that Mr. Miller's property will be totally acquired, and a berm will be
constructed on the Miller property.
Telephone (612) 2494600 • Fax (612) 249-4616
