Box 375
Long Lake, MN 55356
Dear Mr. White:
This letter is to update property owners in the City's industrial district regarding efforts by a
commercial property owner in Long Lake to convince Mn/DOT to include a frontage road,
connecting his property with Old Crystal Bay Road, as part of the Highway 12 upgrade projert. Bob
Erickson, who owns commercial property adjacent to Highway 12 and Industrial Boulevard in Long
Lake, has been lobbying Mn/DOT regarding access issues related to his property for some time. He
initially tried to gain support for an access ramp from new Highway 12 at Willow Drive. As you
may know, the Cities of Long Lake and Orono, as well as Mn/DOT, were strongly opposed to this
proposal.
Mr. Erickson nas now indicated that, as an alternative to an access ramp, he wants a frontage road
that would enable access to his property from Old Crystal Bay Road. Of course, this would require
a road\ ly crossing several properties in Orono's industrial district.
The City has, in the past, discussed a concept plan for a frontage road on the south side of current
Highway 12 that would provide a connection between Old Crystal Bay Road and either Willow
Drive or Industrial Boulevard. The concept plan involved a roadway toward the rear portion of the
industrial properties. The actual location of the roadway would be flexible, and would be
determined based on input from the affected property owners.
This concept could provide benefits in terms of traffic movement and access to future development
in the rear portions of the industrial properties. However, it also would impact the properties in
terms of the right-of-way needed, and the pattern of development that would be possible.
Telephone (612) 249-4600 • Fax (612) 249-4616
