MEETING
StP I 3 1999
Cii I ur OftO/vo
REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DATE: September 8, 1999
ITEM NO: / 7
Department Approval:
Name RonMoorse
THk City Administrator
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
City Administrator's
Rq)Ort
Item Description: Public Works Land Expansion Options
The City has a need for additional land for Public Works-related activities, particularly a brush
disposal site and a leaf composting site. These activities require approximately 2 additional acres
of land. The Council recently directed staff to obtain an appraisal on a 12-acre portion of the
property located just east of the City's Public Works facility. The 12 acres would have provided
suflBcient space for the brush and leaf sites, and would have provided substantial additional land for
future needs. The cost of the 12 acres, based on an appraisal conducted by the County Assessor ’s
Office, was substantially higher than the Council was willing to spend. Staff has now developed a
set of Public Works land expansion options for consideration by the Council. These options are as
follows:
1 . Purchase 3.4 acres of land to the east of the Public Works facility, rather than the 12
acres.
Advantag es:
A. The site is adjacent to the existing Public Works yard area, making it
convenient and efficient to use.
B The site can be easily secured from vehicular access, as the only vehicular
entrance would be through the gate to the Public Works yard.
C. This option would provide approximately 2 acres of dry land for Public
Works activities.
Activities on this site could be screened from adjacent properties.
The acquisition of this land would eliminate the possibility of residential use
directly adjacent to the more active Public Works yard area, which could
create conflicts.
Disadvantag es:
The cost of acquisition is higher than the other alternatives.
