REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
DATE: September 13, 1999
ITEM NO.: /jL.
Department Approval:
Name Gregory A. Gappri
Title Director of Public Services
Administrator Reviewed:Agenda Section:
Engineer's Report
Item Description: Joint Powers Agreement with Metro Transit for Bus Route Signing
The Meu-oplolition Council is asking for the City’s consideration of a program for the installation,
replacement, and maintenance of bus stop signs. This is a reimbursement program in which Met
Council furnishes all of the materials, and the City is reimbursed for the work completed. Many
Cities are already in this program. Met Council has proposed this program as a cost-efft. tive
method for sign maintenance because they do not have adequate staff to complete this work. Cities
have staff available that can cost effectively complete this work as travel costs are minimal. The
initial phase will require replacing all of the existing signs with new signs on the same post. After
this is completed, the work will consist of repairing damaged signs and the occasional installation
of a new sign. There are approximately 120 bus signs in the City of Orono. The estimated project
cost for the initial replacement of the signs is about $8,500. The amount of work required for this
program should be minimal and can be handled by the public works personnel.
We are reconunending Council approval of this Joint Powers Agreement with the Met Council
for the installation, maintenance, and repair of bus stop signs.
COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:
Motion to approve Joint Powers Agreement between the Metropolitan Council and the City of
Orono for the installation, replacement and maintenance of bus stop signs.
