ni. Evaluation of Options
a. Route and Cost Analysis
Providing an outlet for Mooney Lake will require a lift station and pipe to convey
discharge water to an existing drainage system where the water can flow by gravity to
Lake Minnetonka. Six possible outlet route options were identified as a result of
discussions with city staff from adjacent communities and a review of conditions in the
field. Two of the route options were eliminated after further field investigations and
discussions with city staff indicated they were not feasible. The approximate locations
for the remaining four options are shown in Figure 2. A brief discussion of each option is
presented below:
Option 1
Description: The outlet route would be south along the Orono-Plymouth boundary from
the south central shoreline of Mooney Lake. The outlet conveyance system would be a
combination of force main and gravity pipe approximately 1,500 feet in length. The pipe
would connect to a future storm sewer located in Femdale Road at the intersection with
County Road 6. The Femdale Road street and storm sewer improvements project are
scheduled for constmetion in 1999. The discharge would travel through several
stormwater management wetlands southeast of Hadley Lake in Plymouth before reaching
the City of Wayzata’s conveyance system.
Advantages:
Discharge would be conveyed to a new storm sewer system capable of
handling the additional flow and for which easements are already
secured.
No or minimal easement costs. Owner of the land across which the
route traverses has indicated his willingness to grant an easement free
of charge.
The lift station could be placed in a secluded area away from
residences and high traffic areas.
Tree loss would be minimal, since the route is mainly through open
areas.
No access road required. Property owner will allow use of his
driveway for maintenance purposes.
Disadvantages:
The elevation change is large (more than 40 feet), which requires a
larger, more expensive lift station.
Three-phase power will be necessary for operation of the larger pump.
Will require a new line from County Road 6 to the lift station
(approximately 800 feet).
Pipe will have to be jacked under County Road 6
