CITY of ORONO
Municipal Offices
Street Address;
2750 Kelley Pai[kway
Orono, MN 55356
Mailing Address:
P.O. Box 66
Crystal Bay. MN 55323-0066
Douglas and Martha Head
1616 W 22nd St.
Minneapolis MN 55405
Dear Mr, & Mrs. Head;
On March 17, we opened bids for the sewer forcemain project to serve your Lake Minnetonka property. The only
bid received was from M & P Utilities of Hamel Minnesota and is for $43,789.50. This bid does not include the
$5,000 allowance for tht; grinder station that was included in the original cost estimate. With this bid, plus the
$5,000 grinder station credit and the other associated costs, the total estimated project cost would be $64,780.
The contractor stated that they were extremely busy this year because of the large amount of directional boring
work for utility companijs. They also had some co.ncems about boat traffic in the channel interfering with their
ability to monitor the boring progress from their boat. The contractor suggested that being able to complete this
work early in the spring when they could get out on the ice may be easier.
We have discussed »his issue and suggest that rebidding this project with two alternates may result in more
contractor interest and favorable bid prices. Alternate 1 would be to rebid this project for completion this summer,
to see if more contractors will submit bids. Alternate 2 would be to allow the contractors until next year to
complete the project. This would allow completion of the project when there is ice on the channel and monitoring
of the boring may be easier. This may result in lower bid prices as the contractors would have more flexibility-
in their scheduling, and may also be interested in securing work for next year.
Please review this information and provide us direction on how you would like us to proceed with this project.
Thank you for your assistance in this matter. Please contact myself at 612-249-4621, or Tom Kellogg, Bonestroo
Engineers at 651-604-4863 should you have any questions regarding this project.
Sincerely,
Greg Gappa
Director of Public Services
Copy Tom Kellogg, Bonestroo Engineers
Telephone (612) 47y‘13S7 • FAX 473-0510
